...and it's time for a feast! within the last 2 weeks, things have been set in motion for the adoption of all three of our current foster animals! Gem will be going to CODA volunteer Jon, who has a dog and several cats whom are all looking forward to her arrrival some time next weekend. The great news for Ginny and Ivy, however are not only both getting adopted...they're going to the same family! Both of them were taken to the home visit to see which one they would want: Mellow, sweet, thinly built Ivy, or the J-Lo like built, tiger striped attention hog Ginny. They decided on both! They will be going to their new home tomorrow. We'll miss them both, I say as Ginny is knocking unidentified items off the table and batting them around the house...

Can you believe that this happy dog is the same scared pooch in the shelter photo? She is an absolutely AWESOME dog! Now that she has her collar off, she is playing with all the family animals and people! She's not sure what toys are just yet. She doesn't try to harm or even follow the cats around the house. She is TOTALLY housebroken. What a true GEM!! It's amazing what her previous owner gave up!

Today was a big day for Gemini. She had her stitches out from her spay, had her e-collar taken off, and got a bath! Yay Gem!!!

Ginny and Ivy spent the morning crawling in 12 pack boxes with a little catnip in the bottom. Then they slept the afternoon away!

Annie is wondering where this phantom dog is, and when she can play with her! They've only seen each other. They *may* meet tomorrow! : ) There will be lots of playing and mischeif soon!

Gemini is adorable. Please don't laugh at her! She is miserable in her e-collar! She just wants loving. OK, I should say, she just wants loving and TREATS! What a great dog. Plus, she's permanently winking at you! Sorry about the glowing eye there, it was dim light and the reflections were from the inner eye reflecting the light. I need to learn to use the camera.

Gem is currently in medical quarrantine at our foster home.
She was spayed 5/24, and is over her kennel cough. She does have a couple of spots which we are going to have our vet take a look at on Tuesday.
She has been licking her stitches and has to wear an E-collar. The poor little girl.

She isn't letting the collar or her sight slow her down. She is a very cuddly and affectionate pup.

As our neighbor said, if she didn't have a bobbed tail, I wouldn't believe that it wasn't Annie!
She is definately Annie's look-alike!

More soon, gotta read the kid a book before she explodes....

What's going on?!?

In the past 3 weeks, a lot has happened.
I have graduated from college and did what people normally do in that situation- head to Disneyworld!
Ruby went to her dog sitter (another CODA foster home) and she met George (another cocker spaniel) and his mommy. George decided that he wanted Ruby as his forever loving sister.
They are both survivors of the puppy-mill giant corporations that breed these poor animals to death. They will have a relaxing and loving human care-taker who understands their special needs.
Our family dog almost got adopted by her dog sitter family. They tried! heeheee... but in the end they realized how much we love our furball!
The house cats were well-cared for by Joey, who counted paws whenever he came in to feed and water them and depoop the boxes.
The cats are very happy to have us home.
Since Ruby isn't going to her forever home for another week, we decided it was best that she have as few changes prior to her adoption as possible, so she will be staying with her sitter until the adoption goes through.
We are taking in a dog named Gemini. She has one eye, and looks exactly like our family dog.
She will be welcomed with open arms and heart and rehabilitated in the CODA way, with love and trust-building, food and treats with a ton of understanding and play-time! Annie will see to the play-time.
Hopefully Gemini's sight impairment won't keep her from chasing Joanna's bubbles in the back yard with Annie.
As always, it is an exciting time when we get a new foster, be sure to keep an eye out for Gemini's progress.
Ginny and Ivy will be glad to welcome their new CODA sister.

Beach Bum

We spent Friday and Saturday up at the trailer this weekend. Ruby didn't really get into the whole scene until we were almost ready to leave.
Needless to say, Ruby is another trailer mama. She loves the laid-back atmosphere of CPA.
She met a few ladies who immediately fell in love with her, and she enjoyed their petting her head while I held her.
She had a nice wandering walk to the beach, though she isn't much into the waves yet. The sound of the waves lapping didn't agree with her....
Ruby did great in the car- it's an hour's drive each way. She just lay in her dog bed and rested the whole way!
Of course, I forgot my camera to take pictures of Ruby up at the lake... I forgot my clothes and most of the sheets for the beds too!
Okay, we're off to hide the easter baskets for the kid, and dogs! and then relax while chowing on the popcorn we picked up at the Great Lakes Popcorn Company- the greatest place for the munchies!

Ruby got another bath!

This bath was VERY well tolerated by Ruby.
We've been making more progress with her emotionally now that we've been able to be around her more outside. She does LOVE to be outside. She doesn't play fetch or anything, but will toddle after Annie when she is fetching her toys.
In the house she has been rather aloof, but with the addition of some brush/touch therapy, she is really coming around. She's still shy and won't come up to people, but she will follow us around more (unless we're walking toward her).
Body language with dogs is totally different than with humans. Dogs see no threat from the back of a person, and normally turn their backs on one another (unless they're the alpha). So we're working on body language to be less alpha with her.
She didn't love her bath, but she did very well with it. After being groomed by a professional, I don't think we'll be doing that again with her any time soon. If you have a set of dog clippers that you would like to donate, our dogs here would greatly appreciate it! We do have Shirley and Ruby who need to be groomed and clipped to keep their coats under control.
Ginny LOVES Ruby. She will do some kitty loving with Ruby- which Ruby totally loves. Perhaps they can be adopted together since they're bonding.
Ivy is getting her spay surgery in a week and then will be officially ready for adoption! Who wouldn't love that sweet little black kitty?!? She is not a crazy kitten like Ginny who attacks anything that isn't moving.
My bathrobe is a testament to Ginny's playfulness. Every day I take my bathrobe into the bathroom with me, and while I shower, Ginny plays with the strings hanging down. She never tires of playing. She and Joanna are completely in love with one another too.
Today is a busy day for us here at the foster homestead! We're going on vacation soon, and would love to get our fosters placed before we leave so that they don't have to be separated (and Ruby put into a household where she is dwarfed by the great danes-lol).
Ruby is asymptomatic for all of her ailments, and would really love to move to her forever family!

Since many of you are just now tuning in, I would like to remind you that Ruby is a puppy mill survivor. She is about 6 years old. Her medical conditions include: Heart murmur (5), dental issues, cataracts in both eyes (but functional vision), mammary tumors, and a well-earned fear of groomers. She is not a candidate for anesthesia. She does not need any medication to control these issues at this time. She receives huge doses of love and gentle touching. Please see her listing on www.coda.givemepaw.com for more of her specific issues. We, at our foster home, like to focus on the positive, but wanted to remind the new viewers who Ruby is. In short, she is AMAZING!

This pic reminds me that we need to do some grass seed spreading soon! The grass was pretty much demolished by putting up the fence last summer in conjunction with last summer's drought and by the playful antics of Annie and Ubi which seemed to kill pretty much all of the grass by their constant wrestling. Ruby has presented with tapeworm. This is being controlled by Droncit tablets, and she will be perfectly great soon, and will hopefully gain some more weight. She is still quite thin.
The Droncit tablets will rid her of tapeworm completely.
Tapeworm is not 'contagious', and you can't catch it from an infected animal. You need to have a flea intermediate stage, and ingest said flea. Our home is completely flea free, so none of the other animals are at risk. :) Just a little FYI.

Ruby desperately needs a new dog bed. Her old one which has been pictured in this blog is very old, and has been worn out because she spends so much time in it. It's not keeping her comfortable anymore.

I know that we have a lot of Ruby in bed pictures... She really DOES walk around- hahaaa... She follows us when we walk past to see what we're up to- and she investigates the rest of the house when she thinks no one is looking. If we stop and pet her, she will follow us for more ear scratching.
She's potty trained to go outside, and loves walking around on the concrete. She's not too sure about the grass yet. (Which is good because it's more mud than grass right now with this weather!)
If you didn't know, you'd never guess that she was sight impaired because she never bumps into anything and is very highly functional with her sight.
She is looking for her forever home!

Ruby had a little bout with some diarrhea the other day. She received fluids and antibiotics. She's taking some flagyl also. She had a fever which has now subsided. Please consider a donation to CODA to help defer some of our immediate costs!
She is on a bland diet of chicken and rice... She will pick the chicken out of the rice. Smart nose!
Ruby has taken to coming out of her crate to go to the door to be let out for potty! WOW!
She is still a little worried about the grass. She has been going potty on the concrete unless we're out there with her on a leash. It's not bothersome to us, as our driveway is 3 wide, compared to the grass in the back.

She is adjusting very well!
She hasn't bumped into anything, though she did stumble on the last step going outside. I think she may have greater vision over the top of her cataracts. She walks with her head lowered, pointing to the ground so she can see.
Once we convince her to come out of her crate, she walks nicely on a leash to the door. If we convine her to come out of her crate, she will do some investigating. The hard part is getting her to come out of her crate, which is Annie's job. Once she is out, she seems to be fine with people.
She doesn't seem to be afraid of men or women. She just likes the safety of her crate : )

Denise and I picked up Ruby at Gateway Animal Clinic today.
She is such a sweetie! She made all the vet techs fall in love with her. (Denise and I already fell in love!)

Dr. Bob had some encouraging news:
Ruby's heart condition is asymptomatic, and to quote Dr. Bob. "She doesn't know that she has a anything wrong".
She is not on any medications!
That is WONDERFUL news!
Dr. Bob also says that she could be with us for years!
Her eyesight is pretty good considering the cataracts. She didn't even run into the chain-link fence. That is GOOD for a dog with cataracts. Dr. Bob also says that Ruby's cataracts are breaking up and that she has pinpoints of vision! She easily follows moving objects with her eyes and her eyes shift to look at the person who is speaking to her and she follows moving objects.
Her mammary tumors do not cause her any pain, and with luck, they will not grow larger now that she is not being subjected to the hormones that the puppymillers were dosing her with to keep her in heat constantly. The tumors have not metastasised. We're working on research to help make the cysts smaller.
Ruby is starting to learn that humans are good and trustworthy. Annie the dog is helping her learn this. Annie and Ruby aren't allowed to play together yet (Annie is bigger and heavier), but Ruby starts to wag her little tail when Annie comes near!

Ruby has had NO indoor accidents since she has been cleaned up by Denise and I. Not even during her time at the vet's office where she spent 6 days!! She hasn't asked to go potty yet here, but we take her out either at the same time as Annie or shortly after.

She doesn't like hard food unless it has soft food on it. She is picky in that respect, but she eats like a horse! While in the vet's office for her 6 day quarrantine and care, they had to put a sign on her crate "Do not feed any more today"!

Ruby still moves to the back of the crate when hands reach for her, but she does not shake in fear or try to harm humans. Even 4 year old Joanna is allowed near enough to scratch her ears. If left alone, she will come out of her crate and investigate her room a bit. I think she just is comfortable in her crate, not necessarily afraid of people.

Ruby has a little bit of polishing to be done, but she will make someone a GREAT and loving companion!

This wonderful little gal is going to need a special adopter or rescuer. Cheryl was found as a stray and is around 6 years old, unfortunately, Cheryl is blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. She has a very sweet disposition even with her special condition. Cheryl would make a wonderful little pet for someone who is patient and kind. She needs to be groomed as well as her coat is very matted on her legs and underside. If you can help this little girl have a good life, please contact the pound immediately. She needs to get out now!! I just wanted to give you an update on everyone :)

Ubi- He's getting pretty good on a leash. He has a lot of energy and still loves to chase balls all over the house and yard. He may be a pretty good agility dog after he gets out of his puppy stage. Currently available for adoption. About 9 months old, 45 lbs.

Ginny- She's a cutsie little maniac and plays all day long. She is a great cuddler. Perfect for people with mobility impairments because she will go to them for petting and sit for 4 hours+ purring. She comes to her name. Recently available for adoption! About 6-7 months old.

Ivy- She is really coming around the past couple days. She wouldn't leave Joanna's bed for anything except potty and eating. She's now exploring the living room. I caught her looking out the window today! yay! She is very people friendly, but she won't go up to a person for affection. She will take it and love it if you track her down. She responds by making kitty noises when you call her by name. She will be spayed before being made ready for adoption. About 2 years old.

Annie (Huntley resident dog)- Got very jealous and mad when Ubi got a marrow bone and it resulted in some minor arguments. She kept ending up on top, so Ubi and Annie each got one. Ubi is afraid to put it down, and had to go outside to feel comfortable enough to gnaw on it. She is no longer crated and her bed is next to Ubi's. I put Ubi to bed one night around 2am when I was fuzzy headed- turns out the next morning, 2 faces were staring at me out of Ubi's crate. ooops. lol Neither of them made any whining or barking noises the entire night!

I can't believe that it's been 2 months since I updated this!
Ubi is doing great, and STILL looking for a new forever family.

He knows his commands: Sit, Down, Lay, Give Me Paw, and we're working on High-5. He knows many more, but those are the most used :)
He has been neutered, and his mange and all the other baddies are gone.
He presented with tapeworm, and gets his last meds for those tomorrow.

His favorite place to sleep is close to his foster mommy. Well, half-ON his foster mommy.

Ubi got to visit Dr. Brian again last week. He did VERY well! Denise, the director of CODA talked Dr. Brian into letting us skip the harsh chemicals. The bottle was labeled flammable. It made my sinuses go crazy, made me cough and sneeze- I couldn't imagine having it on my body for a long time. When we did the original treatment, we didn't know of the side effects, including siezures and other life-threatening things. He is on a more homeopathic (but still very costly) weekly wash. He is also having another round of antibiotics. His upper respiratory tract infection is hanging in there... and they estimate another 3 weeks before he is well enough for the snip snip surgery... poor little man! Then- he will be ready to be adopted! YAY! He is such a wonderful pup! Even the cats are starting to like him!!! At 15, 9 and 8, they don't like anything new or different, but they tolerate Ubi!
Ubi is also adding veggies to his diet to boost his immune system, along with some very strong supplements to make him a top-notch healthy pup!
When he can sit still long enough, I will have him give his own account of the past couple weeks.

Sometimes when I think Ubi is too grown up for puppy-dom, he surprises me. Today, he looked like a kitten running through the house pouncing on rawhides. We've been leaving rawhide chips all over the place because it is the most argued-over toy. While Ubi makes them mushy and squishy, Annie eats them like a treat. She just chows through them.
He gets scared in thunder and lightning (imagine the hurricane he lived through). I had to shove him out into the mist this morning. He did NOT want to get wet. Annie even looked at me like I was someone totally insane for opening the door for them. I even tried to tempt them with treats! They weren't going to have it. (they sat by the door. Ubi laid down in his 'ain't gonna happen stance'.) Eventually, after breakfast they did go out. Ubi had to poop. He knows better than to go in the house! : ) GOOD BOY!!! Annie helped in that, I think- if she goes out, he will too.
Ubi goes for his next mange treatment at the vet's on Thursday. : ( Poor baby! He is not losing hair so much anymore. He was balding constantly for a while.

For 2 days, I kept wondering how Joanna's slipper kept falling out of the shoe basket... until I saw Ubi walk over to the basket and remove the slipper. He isn't chewing on it. Just taking it out. It's like a pillow for him!
He is doing well. Swelling from the Mange has gone down and his skin isn't quite as stiff and dry as it has been. He still has a runny nose and a cough. He will require continued antibiotics in addition to his mange treatments.
Please check out his paw print auction on ebay! As channel 25 says during it's auction fund raising drive: "Bid high and bid often!" (I don't have the annoying horn to honk though.)
We want to thank everyone for their well-wishes for Ubi. He is absolutely adorable wen he does is "Bassett Flop". He just suddenly plops down and chills out.
He had a hard time in the storm last night. There was a lot of lightning and thunder. I can only imagine how scared he must have been when he was all alone in New Orleans, during the raging hurricane. I am just thankful that he was one of the dogs that made it out and will be well soon so that he can join a new forever family!
Gotta run. Ubi is cuddling up to Tickle-Me Elmo and setting off the giggles! Kind of like a vibrating bed!

Dear Friends,
: ) My dog-sister and I have been playing in mom's tall ornamental grass. I noticed today that it wasn't quite so tall anymore. Mom said she would upload a picture of her new grass, post-Ubi, soon. We had a GREAT time hiding and jumping out to surprise each other. It was great!
Today I didn't do much, other than slobber on my dog-sister, chew on rawhides and play.
Denise from CODA came to check on me. I gave her LOTS of kisses, and she is impressed with how good I look. (I am mighty handsome, everyone says!)
My new humans are fun. They let me play with balls in the house. They are so round and roll-y. I like to chew on the cat's pom-poms. They tickle my mouth. I do know better than to chew on other things in the house. I know what my toys are, and what my human 3 year old sister's toy are.
I am learning that the little fuzzy puffs are called CATS, and they are my superiors. They tell me all the time when they whack me in the head. I respect them, and will do well with kitties in a new home, as long as they are as old an ornery as my 3 current bosses (Herman, Spackle and Bear).
My human sister likes to throw toys for me. I am pretty good about not jumping, and know DOWN! I am a very good listener!

Mom's note:
Ubi is a very good sitter. He will sit with a hand signal and a verbal command.
Ubi is learning to sit at the door, instead of rushing out like a maniac.
He is an amazingly smart dog for his age. He seems to know what we ask him to do, and he is only 3-4 months old. He has an old soul with a bit of baby thrown in!
His crate has been clean for a while now! He definately is passing the crate training and house training hurdle! He is still learning that his crate is a comfort zone, not a punishment.
Other accomplishments include walking nicely on a leash. He may pull occasionally, but not very much. This may be due to his 'puppy gait'. He tends to gallop a bit, alternating with a nice walk. He is enjoying checking out the smells and sights! His favorite thing to watch is the squirrel show that takes place in our backyard almost daily, as the squirrels sit on the garage, surrounding bushes and walk along the fence top and wires to taunt the dogs. The squirrels actually chitter-chatter at the dogs to incite them!

Dear Friends,
I have found my dream! A place where everyone wants to pet me and give me attention! They call it 'the trailer', but *I* call it 'never ending walks and playing'. I met a lot of new people who wanted to talk to my foster mom about me. I had so many scratches from people! I met a lot of other dogs, and they liked me too! (most of them)... I am a rambunctious puppy. I have a lot more energy now.
Everywhere I turned, there were things to chew on! I am getting my adult teeth in, and am losing my 'practice teeth'. I chewed on rawhide bones, picnic tables, fiber glass stairs, and my dog sister. I was told that I wasn't allowed to chew on three of the four of those things. See if you can figure out which! heehee. I am a good puppy, and I listened and stopped chewing on the naughty things. There were lots more good things to chew on. I really like tennis balls. I mean, really-really like them. They roll all on their own! Squeaky toys absolutely are the best too!
My dog sister got a little upset with me today. I stole her bed, her raw hide, and ate her food. I still think she loves me. I am not as timid as I was a few days ago.
I met my foster mom's cousin, Marilyn this weekend. She loves dogs. She played with me for a long time, and even let me use her fingers for a chewie (hey- it's her fault that she stuck her fingers in my mouth to begin with!) I am very careful with people fingers. I take treats very gently, even from my human sister. She's a little unsure of me, because she knows I am not staying, and well- I am a rambunctious puppy! She didn't like me sitting on her lap in the car either. Mom made me sit in the front with her. I got to put my head on her lap and get my head scratched almost all the way home!
I am so happy to be here! I am adjusting well, they tell me. I will talk to you soon, I see something I need to chew on... : )
